‘Forest’ was a large interactive musical laser installation commissioned by and premiered at the STRP Biennale in Eindhoven. We worked with Marshmallow Laser Feast to carry this project from concept to installation with everything in-between – prototyping, testing, choosing materials & built. The result was “a giant interactive forest covering almost 450 square meters, composed of over 150 musical ‘trees’ made of rods and lasers. The audience was free to explore the space, physically tapping, shaking, plucking, and vibrating the trees to trigger sounds and lasers. The trees were designed and engineered to swing and oscillate upon interaction by using springs and weights, creating vibrating patterns of light and sound. Each tree was tuned to a specific tone, producing harmonious sounds spatialized and played through a powerful surround sound setup.”

We designed and installed this pop-up studio+gallery for Peckham Print Studio at Boxpark in Shoreditch, one of London’s prime retail locations. Using reclaimed materials, we made various modular units that could be used in different formations, allowing maximum use of the space. Throughout the week-long installation a range of printing workshops and events took place in the space. The installation also acted as a gallery space for established illustrators to show case and sell their work.

UK studio JAILmake‘s ‘four day chairs’ are each made from solid ash and individually carved into desired form.
the progression of the designs, from morning-noon-afternoon-evening, is apparent in the size and style of the seating pieces.
from a low-rocker, mid-back chair, high-back rocker and deep-seat lounger, each one has been conceived according
to the time of day they are meant to represent, resulting in a visually cohesive collection.

JAILmake and PAN Studio were asked to design pop-up exhibition stalls for the Be Open Space, an instant flash market for emerging designers at Tom Dixon Studios, part of London Design Festival.

In keeping with the notion of immediacy presented by Be Open Space, the entire installation was conceived, designed, and built within 7 days.

The Exhibition space was open during London Design Festival 2012.

Exhibitors included: Tom Dixon, Studio Toogood, Traces, Technology will save us, Awosile & Tikau.

For London Design Festival 2012 we packed up us much of our 205 square metre studio as we could and condensed it into just five square metres at design show Tent London, where worked to a new brief every day producing models, sketches and prototypes.

The space was equipped with a small number of the tools from the JAILmake studio along with texture samples, a library of ‘reference objects’ and basic materials (clay, wire, card, paper, timber).

Tom Dixon/Be Open Space

JAILmake and PAN Studio were asked to design pop-up exhibition stalls for the Be Open Space, an instant flash market for emerging designers at Tom Dixon Studios, part of London Design Festival.

In keeping with the notion of immediacy presented by Be Open Space, the entire installation was conceived, designed, and built within 7 days. (You will be able to see the whole process with full documentation in a couple of weeks).

“The marketplace for emerging designers at BE OPEN SPACE at The Dock, Tom Dixon’s space in West London, which will be hosting a packed programme of London Design Festival Events.  Designers will show, sell, produce and explore the five senses in a dynamic and interactive meeting place for design enthusiasts. Pan Studio and JAILmake are creating a site-specific installation on the Dock terrace that will reference the medieval trade markets and Florence’s Ponte Vecchio, populating the terrace with 8 self-contained wooden huts that mirror the architecture of the converted wharf building that houses Dock Kitchen Restaurant.  The installation incorporates the water with a plethora of luminous ribbons cascading from the rooftops to the waters beneath.  Each hut will showcase exclusive works by an exciting mix of emerging designers; confirmed participants include Studio TooGood and Technology Will Save Us.”
